A Growing Trend With a Timing Problem

Time-restricted eating, a form of intermittent fasting that limits food intake to a set daily window, has surged in popularity as a tool for weight loss and metabolic health. But a growing body of research suggests that many people are approaching it the wrong way.

Rather than simply shrinking the number of hours spent eating, scientists say the position of that window within the day may be just as important. Multiple studies now indicate that eating earlier — and finishing dinner sooner — produces better metabolic outcomes than skipping breakfast and eating late.

A 2024 literature review of 13 randomized controlled trials found that early time-restricted eating, generally defined as taking the first meal before roughly 10:30 a.m., improved insulin resistance more effectively than eating windows that started after midday.


Why the Body Prefers an Early Breakfast

The explanation lies in a field called chrononutrition, which studies how the timing of meals interacts with the body's internal clock. A central clock in the brain, known as the suprachiasmatic nucleus, coordinates smaller clocks in the liver, gut, pancreas and fat tissue.

These peripheral clocks govern how efficiently the body processes glucose and fat throughout the day. Research published in Cell Reports Medicine found that confining meals to an early six-hour window improved 24-hour blood sugar control and other cardiometabolic markers, even though it didn't change how much energy the intestines absorbed from food.

Several hormonal factors help explain the pattern:

  • Glucose tolerance is typically highest in the morning and declines as the day progresses.
  • Melatonin, which rises in the evening to prepare the body for sleep, also suppresses insulin release.
  • Levels of GLP-1, a hormone that supports insulin response, tend to be higher earlier in the day.

Taken together, these mechanisms mean the same meal can be processed differently depending on when it's eaten.


The Cost of Skipping Breakfast

Multiple large studies link breakfast skipping to worse long-term health outcomes. A systematic review and meta-analysis published in the journal Obesity found that skipping breakfast raised total and LDL ("bad") cholesterol levels compared with regularly eating it, even when it led to modest weight loss.

A separate 2025 meta-analysis covering more than 118,000 participants, highlighted by Harvard Health, found that habitually skipping breakfast was associated with a 10 percent higher risk of metabolic syndrome — a cluster of conditions including high blood pressure, high blood sugar and abdominal obesity that raises the risk of heart disease and diabetes.

Other research has connected the habit to increased cardiovascular risk. A systematic review of prospective cohort studies found that people who regularly skipped breakfast had a substantially higher likelihood of atherosclerosis, a hardening and narrowing of the arteries, compared with those who ate a substantial morning meal.


Who Should Be Especially Careful

Not everyone experiences these effects the same way. Women managing insulin resistance, polycystic ovary syndrome or perimenopause may be particularly sensitive to irregular eating patterns, since energy restriction interacts closely with reproductive hormone regulation.

Skipping meals can place additional strain on the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal axis, the body's central stress-response system, which in turn can affect hormone balance over time.

Medical guidance generally recommends that children, pregnant or breastfeeding women, people with a history of eating disorders and those on glucose-lowering medication consult a doctor before adopting any form of fasting. Meal timing is also not a substitute for diet quality — a nutrient-poor breakfast eaten "at the right time" still offers limited benefit.


An Older Tradition Reaches a Similar Conclusion

Long before modern chronobiology existed, other health traditions arrived at comparable ideas through different means. In Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), a medical framework with roots going back thousands of years, the body's digestive energy is believed to peak between 7 and 9 a.m., making this the optimal window for a nourishing meal.

Evening hours, by contrast, are traditionally associated with the body winding down, which is why TCM generally favors a lighter dinner eaten earlier rather than a heavy meal late at night.

While TCM and modern circadian science stem from entirely different methodologies — one rooted in centuries of clinical observation, the other in laboratory-based endocrinology — both point toward the same practical conclusion: mornings are built for fuel, and evenings for rest.


The Outlook

As time-restricted eating continues to grow in popularity, researchers increasingly emphasize that when people eat may be just as consequential as how long they fast. For those considering an eating window, the current evidence points in one clear direction: an earlier breakfast and a lighter, earlier dinner align better with the body's internal clock than the reverse.

Anyone with existing health conditions, or who is pregnant, underweight, or has a history of disordered eating, should speak with a physician or registered dietitian before changing their eating schedule.
