A New Angle on an Old Question

Weight loss has long been linked to better brain health in older age. But a new pilot study asks a sharper question: does it matter when people eat, not just how much?

Researchers at Rutgers University in New Jersey set out to test this directly. Their findings, presented at NUTRITION 2026, the annual meeting of the American Society for Nutrition, suggest that the timing of meals may influence cognitive performance independently of weight loss itself.

How the Study Worked

The trial enrolled 47 postmenopausal women, aged 50 to 79, who were overweight or living with obesity. All participants cut their daily calorie intake by about 500 calories, then were split into two groups.

One group ate within a standard 12-hour window, similar to typical daily eating habits. The other group ate within a shorter window of about eight to nine hours, finishing their last meal roughly four hours before bedtime. After six months, both groups had lost a comparable amount of weight — around 6 to 7.5 kilograms on average.

Different Outcomes, Despite Similar Weight Loss

Even though the pounds came off at a similar rate, the two groups did not perform the same on cognitive testing. The early, shorter-window group showed measurable improvements in spatial planning and problem-solving — skills that fall under what scientists call "executive function" (the brain's ability to plan, organize, and manage tasks). This group also showed fewer errors related to memory and learning.

Study lead Sue Shapses, a professor at Rutgers University and Rutgers Robert Wood Johnson Medical Center, said losing weight alone already helps offset some age-related cognitive decline. Restricting the eating window further, she suggested, may provide an additional benefit on top of that.

Not every cognitive measure improved. Reaction time and multitasking ability showed no significant difference between the groups, and sleep quality did not change either way.

Why Meal Timing Might Matter

The researchers did not test the underlying biology directly, but they point to the body's circadian rhythm — its internal 24-hour clock — as a likely explanation. Nearly every organ, including the brain, runs on its own daily cycle, and that cycle is partly set by when a person eats rather than only what they eat.

When eating happens late into the evening, it may push these internal clocks out of sync, potentially affecting how well the brain performs on tasks the next day. Eating earlier and stopping several hours before bed may help keep those systems aligned.

What the Researchers Still Don't Know

Both researchers and outside experts urge caution. The trial was small, included only women, and was not designed to test diet quality directly — a shorter eating window is not a substitute for a nutritious diet.

The Rutgers team says larger studies are needed to confirm the results and to explore the biological mechanisms involved, including how circadian rhythm, inflammation, and metabolic health interact with meal timing. Future research also aims to test whether these cognitive benefits apply to people who are not actively trying to lose weight.

The Bigger Picture

Dementia risk rises with age, and women, along with people who are overweight or obese, face a higher likelihood of developing cognitive decline. While this study is preliminary, it adds to a growing body of research suggesting that simple, low-cost lifestyle changes — like shifting meal times earlier in the day — could play a role in supporting brain health as people age.
