Reaching for a doorknob and feeling a sudden sting is something almost everyone has experienced. For some people, though, it happens constantly — every car door, every handshake, every light switch.

The frequency isn't random. It depends on a mix of environment, clothing, and the body itself.

The Physics Behind the Zap

Static shocks come from an effect called triboelectric charging. When two surfaces touch and then separate — a sock sliding across carpet, for example — electrons move from one surface to the other. This creates an imbalance of electric charge on or within a material, and that charge stays put until it can escape as a current or a spark.

The human body conducts electricity well, so it can hold onto that extra charge, especially when insulated by rubber-soled shoes or dry air. Touching something conductive, like a metal doorknob, lets the built-up charge escape all at once. That sudden burst is the shock people feel.

Oddly, scientists still don't fully understand why some materials charge positively and others negatively, or why identical materials can transfer charge between each other at all. Researchers have known for more than a century that static discharge outcomes vary with temperature, moisture, and the surfaces involved, and a busy research community is still working out the details. A 2019 study from Northwestern University added a piece of the puzzle, showing that tiny surface deformations created by rubbing can generate the voltage differences behind triboelectricity.

Why Dry Skin Makes It Worse

Moisture normally lets built-up charge dissipate gradually instead of all at once. That's one reason static shocks spike in winter.

Dry skin is very common and tends to worsen in winter, when the air is cold and dry — frequent bathing can make it worse still. Skin also thins and produces less sweat with age, which is why older adults are more prone to dryness. Indoor heating strips even more moisture from the air, compounding the effect.

Clothing and footwear matter too. Certain synthetic fabrics generate more friction-based charge, and rubber soles prevent that charge from draining safely into the ground.

A Different Lens: Traditional Chinese Medicine

Practitioners of traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) look at the same problem from another angle. In TCM theory, health depends on the smooth flow of "qi" — a vital energy whose balance and free circulation are considered central to overall wellbeing — along with blood, "yin," and body fluids.

It's worth noting that these concepts don't map onto Western biology. The U.S. National Center for Complementary and Integrative Health (NCCIH) takes a scientific view of TCM practices, studying their physical effects rather than validating ideas like qi itself, for which there is no direct scientific proof. Even so, TCM practitioners have long linked constitutional patterns to symptoms like dryness and poor circulation, which they say can also make some people more prone to static buildup. Three patterns are commonly described.

Qi stagnation and blood stasis. When qi doesn't flow smoothly, TCM holds that blood circulation slows down with it. Associated signs include a dull complexion, chest tightness, and low mood. Traditional remedies for this pattern lean on gentle movement and circulation-supporting foods such as rose, safflower, and wood ear mushroom.

Blood and yin deficiency. This pattern is linked to pale lips or nails, dizziness, dry skin, and cold hands and feet. In TCM, "yin" represents the body's cooling and moisturizing functions; foods traditionally used to address deficiency include red dates, longan, and cherries, along with warm foot soaks in winter.

Fluid deficiency. Here dryness itself dominates — dry skin, dry mouth, thirst, and sometimes night sweats. Cooling, moistening foods like lily bulb, pear, and the herb Ophiopogon japonicus are traditionally recommended, though the latter isn't considered suitable for people who feel the cold easily.

Acupuncture, one of TCM's better-studied practices, does have some scientific backing. Research suggests it can ease chronic pain conditions such as low-back and neck pain, and may help reduce tension headaches, though some trials have found real and sham acupuncture equally effective, pointing to a placebo component.

Practical Steps to Cut Down on Static

Whichever explanation resonates, the fixes overlap. Drinking enough water supports skin hydration, and dermatologists recommend applying moisturizer right after washing to lock it in. A humidifier can offset the dryness caused by winter heating, and swapping rubber-soled shoes or synthetic fabrics for more static-resistant alternatives reduces how much charge builds up in the first place.

TCM-based approaches — warm foot soaks, circulation-supporting teas, or acupressure — can be layered on top of these habits, though people should consult a doctor before use if pregnant, on medication, or managing an existing health condition.

When It's Not Just Static

Persistent dry skin is occasionally linked to underlying conditions such as hypothyroidism or diabetes, so it's worth mentioning to a doctor if moisturizing and humidifying don't help.

More importantly, not every "shock-like" sensation is static electricity. Peripheral neuropathy can produce prickling, tingling, burning, or electric shock-like sensations that occur without touching anything at all. Diabetes is the most common cause of this nerve damage, though it can also stem from less serious issues like a compressed nerve. Anyone experiencing unexplained shock-like sensations — especially without contact with another object — should have it evaluated by a physician rather than assuming it's static.
