The Weed in Your Backyard That's Teaching Scientists About Cancer Cells
A common garden weed has quietly become one of the more intriguing subjects in cancer research. Lab studies show that dandelion root extract can trigger the death of several types of cancer cells while leaving healthy cells untouched. More than a decade of research later, human clinical trials still haven't delivered a clear answer — and the story of why reveals as much about the science system as it does about the plant itself.

A Story That Was Hard to Ignore
An older woman with terminal leukemia asked to leave the hospital. Doctors did not expect to see her again. Two weeks later she returned, and blood tests showed her cancer markers had dropped by half. The only change in her routine was a tea made from dandelion root.
Her roommate in the hospital heard the story and tried the same tea. Her markers dropped by a quarter.
One case might be coincidence. Two cases prompted her oncologist, Dr. Caroline Hamm, to call a biochemist she had worked with before: Siyaram Pandey, at the University of Windsor in Ontario, Canada.

From Skepticism to a Formal Study
In 2011, Pandey launched a structured investigation into dandelion root as a possible non-toxic cancer treatment. The research was funded in part by the parents of Kevin Couvillon, a young man who died of leukemia in 2010 after chemotherapy severely weakened his immune system. His parents wanted to support research into gentler alternatives.
Pandey was initially doubtful. His earlier work involved purified plant compounds with known, well-documented anti-cancer effects — not home-brewed tea of uncertain origin. To test the idea properly, he made his own standardized extract in the lab.
The first results surprised him. In leukemia cell cultures, the extract killed cancer cells rapidly while sparing healthy ones — a selectivity that changed how he thought about plant-based compounds.

How the Extract Appears to Work
Laboratory studies suggest dandelion root extract attacks cancer cells through several mechanisms at once: triggering programmed cell death, disrupting the energy-producing structures inside cells (mitochondria), increasing oxidative stress, and pushing cells into a self-digesting breakdown process.
Unlike standard chemotherapy, which targets any fast-dividing cell — healthy or cancerous — the extract has repeatedly shown selectivity for cancer cells in these lab studies, according to Pandey's own published research on dandelion extract's effects across multiple cancer cell models with no measured toxicity to non-cancer cells. One compound of particular interest is taraxasterol, a plant defense chemical concentrated in the root, with documented anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties.

What the Published Studies Actually Show
The Windsor team's research, later confirmed by other laboratories, has been published in peer-reviewed journals over more than a decade.
A 2016 study in Oncotarget found that the aqueous extract activated multiple cell-death pathways in colorectal cancer cells without harming healthy cells in laboratory models. Separate lab work reported similar cancer-cell-killing effects in melanoma, pancreatic, and leukemia cell lines, and in mouse models of prostate cancer the extract slowed tumor growth when combined with standard chemotherapy.
Other independent research groups have since tested dandelion compounds against breast, liver, and cervical cancer cell lines, generally reporting comparable effects. A 2025 review in the journal Nutrients surveyed this accumulated evidence and concluded that dandelion root extracts and specific compounds such as taraxasterol continue to show anti-tumor activity across multiple cell-signaling pathways, while stressing that almost all of the data still comes from cells in a dish or from animals — not from humans.
That distinction matters enormously in medicine. Substances that kill cancer cells in a test tube frequently fail to help real patients, for reasons ranging from how the body absorbs and breaks down the compound to how tumors behave in a living, complex organism.

The Clinical Trial That Struggled
This is where the story gets more complicated than lab results alone suggest.
Health Canada approved a Phase 1 human clinical trial of the extract in blood cancer patients in 2012, and the study — based at the Windsor Regional Cancer Centre — opened for recruitment in 2015, aiming to enroll 30 terminally ill patients. But the trial struggled badly with recruitment, in part because a separate news report had publicly cast doubt on dandelion tea as a cancer cure, discouraging potential participants. Only a handful of patients ultimately signed up over five years, and funding was not renewed.
Pandey later shifted part of his research attention to other natural compounds, including lemongrass extract, while the dandelion extract technology itself was transferred to a private company. A supplementary human trial has not yet materialized, though Pandey says he continues to seek funding for one.
Medical fact-checkers have also weighed in on public claims about the research. PolitiFact confirmed that the widely cited figure of dandelion extract killing over 95 percent of colon cancer cells came from real, published University of Windsor research — but noted the study was conducted on cells in a petri dish, not in the human body, a caveat that researchers themselves have repeatedly stressed to journalists.

What an Oncologist Says Patients Should Know
Medical oncologists who have reviewed the preclinical data describe it as biologically plausible and worth further study — but caution against overinterpreting it. Lab findings should guide further research, not clinical decisions, is the general view among specialists in integrative oncology.
At the same time, physicians increasingly acknowledge patient demand for complementary approaches alongside standard treatment, particularly once conventional options have been exhausted. Surveys have found that a majority of cancer patients are interested in complementary therapies and want access to them through mainstream healthcare, which has fueled calls for oncology training programs to include more education on evidence-based integrative approaches.
The consistent medical advice: patients considering herbal or botanical products, including dandelion extract, should tell their oncology team, since interactions with cancer treatments are possible. Botanical remedies are best considered a complement to established cancer therapy, not a replacement for it, unless strong clinical trial evidence says otherwise.

Documented Patient Cases
Pandey has collected more than 150 case reports of patients with advanced cancers who took the extract on their own initiative and later recovered. Two cases have drawn particular attention.
John DiCarlo, a 70-year-old man with treatment-resistant leukemia, began drinking the tea after conventional treatment had failed and he had been placed on palliative care. Within two weeks he went into remission and lived for six more years with a good quality of life, before dying of an unrelated illness. His case was later published as a peer-reviewed case report and presented at a hematology conference.
Paula Drew was diagnosed with aggressive breast cancer that progressed to terminal, metastatic disease within three months despite chemotherapy. After starting dandelion root tea alongside immune-supporting supplements, follow-up scans months later showed no detectable cancer. More than a decade later, she remains cancer-free.
Cases like these do not substitute for a controlled clinical trial, but researchers argue they are difficult to dismiss entirely, particularly given the consistency of the reported pattern.

Outlook
More than fourteen years after the research began, dandelion root extract remains in a scientific limbo familiar to many natural compounds: promising in the lab, unconfirmed in humans, and short on the funding needed to close that gap. No health authority currently recognizes it as a cancer treatment, and no completed, peer-reviewed human clinical trial has yet reported results.
Whether the next attempt at a properly funded, adequately recruited trial happens may depend less on the biology — which researchers describe as increasingly well understood — and more on financing and public interest in an era when many resources are directed toward pharmaceutical drug development rather than natural compounds.
