Deadly Chinese Airbag Parts Banned in the U.S. After 10 Fatal Crashes
American safety regulators have officially banned substandard Chinese-made airbag inflators that are linked to ten deaths and two serious injuries across the United States. The components were illegally imported and installed in used vehicles, turning a life-saving device into a lethal hazard.

A Safety Device Turned Deadly Weapon
America's roads are supposed to be made safer by airbags. But for at least ten drivers, a replacement airbag became the cause of their death. On Wednesday, April 29, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) — the U.S. government agency responsible for road safety — announced a formal ban on counterfeit airbag inflators manufactured by the Chinese company Jilin Province Detiannuo Automobile Safety System Co., Ltd., commonly known as DTN.
The agency has confirmed 12 crashes in the United States directly linked to these faulty components, resulting in ten fatalities and two severe injuries. All of these deaths occurred in crashes that should have been survivable.
How the Inflators Killed
A functioning airbag inflator deploys rapidly in a crash, filling the airbag with gas to cushion the driver. The DTN inflators did the opposite: they exploded. Instead of protecting drivers, they sent large metal fragments tearing into chests, necks, eyes, and faces.
The most recent fatality occurred on February 16 in Clarksdale, Mississippi, involving a 2020 Chevrolet Malibu. Of the 12 documented incidents, nine took place in Chevrolet Malibu vehicles and three in Hyundai Sonata models. However, NHTSA has made clear that the danger may not be confined to these two models alone.
Illegally Imported Since 2023
The DTN inflators are — and have always been — prohibited from sale in the United States. Yet NHTSA says they have been entering the country illegally since at least May 2023, likely through unknown importers and then installed by repair shops, possibly unaware of their origin or simply cutting costs.
DTN itself disputes direct responsibility. In a filing with NHTSA, the company stated it cannot be proven that the inflators in question were manufactured by DTN, nor that they caused the accidents. The company also pointed to NHTSA's own findings that at least five Chinese manufacturers produce similar substandard components.
Regardless, NHTSA was unequivocal: "Whoever is bringing them into the country and installing them is putting American families in danger."
Trump Administration Acts — and Warns Used Car Buyers
U.S. Transportation Secretary Sean P. Duffy did not mince words: "Our initial investigation into the use of illegal Chinese airbags in auto shops has revealed a disturbing trend: these substandard parts are killing American families. The Trump Administration will continue to fight to keep you and your family safe on our roads."
The ban follows an investigation NHTSA opened in October 2025. An initial ruling in early April 2026 triggered a public comment period; the formal ban announced this week is the result of that regulatory process.
NHTSA is urging anyone who drives a used vehicle that was previously in a crash — especially if the airbag deployed at any point since 2020 — to act immediately:
- Obtain a vehicle history report (free airbag deployment checks are available via services like CARFAX.com/airbags using the vehicle's VIN number).
- Have the vehicle inspected by a certified mechanic or dealership technician.
- If a DTN inflator is found: do not drive the vehicle until it has been replaced with genuine original equipment parts.
- Report the illegal product to your local FBI field office and to NHTSA directly.
A Familiar Danger — With New Urgency
This is not the first time defective airbag inflators have made headlines in the U.S. The Takata airbag scandal — the largest automotive recall in American history — similarly involved inflators that ruptured and expelled metal shrapnel. That crisis affected tens of millions of vehicles globally and led to multiple deaths and injuries over more than a decade.
The DTN case echoes that disaster, but with an added dimension: deliberate illegal importation. The components are not the result of a manufacturer's negligence that slipped through quality control — they are banned goods that should never have entered the supply chain.
Investigators are still working to determine how many DTN inflators have made it into U.S. vehicles. No traditional recall is possible, NHTSA says, because there is no comprehensive list of affected vehicles — a direct consequence of the illegal and untraceable nature of the imports.
What This Means for Used Car Buyers
The case is a stark warning for anyone purchasing a used vehicle, particularly one with a salvage or rebuilt title — categories that many of the affected cars fall into. Cheap replacement parts are a well-known risk in the second-hand car market, and this case shows the potentially fatal consequences.
Experts and attorneys already involved in related lawsuits describe the DTN inflators as acting "like a grenade" — transforming what should be a life-saving moment into a death sentence. Several lawsuits have already been filed on behalf of victims' families.
NHTSA's message to consumers is straightforward: if you don't know your vehicle's full repair history, find out now. The life it saves may be your own.
