On August 25, 2026, local time, a major fire broke out at a large natural gas chemical project under construction near Svobodny in Russia’s Far East Amur Region. The project, officially known as the Amur Gas Chemical Complex (AGCC), is a flagship China-Russia joint venture. It is being developed by Russian petrochemical company Sibur and China Petrochemical Corporation, also known as Sinopec. The project was in the critical commissioning stage before production began.
