What the Nepal-China Disaster Reveals About China’s Military and Political System

The August 26 Himalayan disaster struck both Nepal and China — but the rescue efforts looked dramatically different.
Nepal, one of Asia’s poorest countries, deployed tens of thousands of soldiers, police, helicopters and local volunteers, while China’s much larger military response raised serious questions about rescue speed, helicopter deployment, command structure and transparency.
In this program, I compare how Nepal and China handled the same disaster — from local rescue efforts and military deployment to missing-person data, media access and censorship — and ask what the contrast reveals about the PLA and China’s highly centralized political system.
