The continuing economic slowdown in China is keeping people reluctant to marry. The number of marriage registrations keeps falling. On May 9, official statistics showed that in the first quarter, 1.7 million couples registered to marry, 113,000 fewer than in the first quarter of 2025—a 6.24% drop. This marks the tenth consecutive year of year-over-year decline. Back in the first quarter of 2016, 3.45 million couples registered. In just ten years, the number of marriage registrations has been cut in half.
