Taiwanese Tourist Found Dead in Hotel Near Mount Fuji, Fellow Traveler Arrested
A 38-year-old Taiwanese woman was found dead in a hotel room in the Mount Fuji resort town of Fujikawaguchiko on October 19. A 27-year-old Taiwanese woman from the same tour group was arrested at the scene. For now, she is held on a knife-possession charge, not on suspicion of murder. Taiwanese media have reported further details about both women, but several of these claims remain unconfirmed.
.
What Happened
The two women were part of a tour group from Taiwan staying at a hotel in Fujikawaguchiko, in Japan's Yamanashi Prefecture. On Monday morning, October 19, one of them did not appear at the group's meeting point.
Shortly after 8 a.m., hotel staff went to check her room. They found her without vital signs and with visible injuries. Emergency services were called.
Police found the 27-year-old woman in the room and seized a kitchen knife with a blade of about 12 centimeters (4.7 inches). She was arrested on suspicion of violating Japan's Firearm and Sword Possession Control Law.
.
The Charge and the Investigation
So far, the arrest rests on the weapons law, not on a homicide charge. According to Japanese media reports, she admitted to having the knife when questioned. Investigators suspect she may know how the victim was fatally injured.
Police say they are treating the case as a criminal matter. They are still examining how the two women knew each other and what caused the death. According to The Standard, citing Taiwanese media, an autopsy found that the woman bled to death from a deep stab wound to the neck. The suspect was reportedly handed over to prosecutors on October 21. Police have not said whether she will face a murder charge.
In Japan, a suspect is presumed innocent until a court decides otherwise. The suspect has reportedly not admitted to killing the woman.
.
Reports About the Two Women
Taiwanese media have reported that the victim is the daughter of the head of Taiwan's National Airborne Service Corps, the country's air rescue agency. He was reportedly due to appear at a legislative session on October 22 but took leave to fly to Japan. This has been reported by the media and not officially confirmed.
The same reports raise questions about the suspect's past. Court records cited by Taiwanese outlet Mirror Media show that a woman with the same name was sentenced in August 2025 for money laundering. She had reportedly handed bank cards and passwords to a fraud group, and six victims transferred money into those accounts. Some outlets use the word "suspected" when linking that case to the arrested woman, and the identity match has not been fully confirmed.
Another open question is whether the women knew each other. Early reports said they had signed up for the tour separately. Later, internet users noticed that their social media accounts followed each other. These are online observations, not established facts.
.
Official Response
Taiwan's Ministry of Foreign Affairs said it had contacted the families of those involved and would provide whatever help was needed. Taiwan's Tourism Administration said the travel agency had reported the incident and promised to cooperate with Japanese police.
According to the administration, all members of the tour group were insured. Coverage included NT$2.5 million (about US$80,000) for accidental death. The administration did not comment on any link between the two women.
.
What Comes Next
The key questions are whether prosecutors will bring a murder charge, how the women were connected, and what led to the death. Japanese police have so far released few details. The facts should become clearer as the investigation moves forward and prosecutors decide how to proceed.
