Magnitude 7.0 Earthquake Hits Northern Tibet: At Least 16 Dead, Hundreds of Homes Collapsed

A powerful earthquake struck the remote north of Tibet late on Thursday night, local time. Chinese state media report at least 16 deaths, dozens of injuries and more than 300 collapsed homes. Rescue teams are working in thin air, in the cold and on difficult terrain. Tibetans have already lived through several disasters in the past two years, and many are asking how openly Beijing will report this one.

Magnitude 7.0 Earthquake Hits Northern Tibet: At Least 16 Dead, Hundreds of Homes Collapsed

.

A Night Shaken Out of Sleep

The quake hit at 10:33 p.m. local time on Thursday, October 22 (14:33 GMT). Both the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) and China's own earthquake agency measured a magnitude of 7.0.

Videos from state-run media show residents running out of their houses and sheltering outdoors or in parked cars. One resident said the house creaked loudly as the ground shook.

What We Know So Far

Xinhua, the Chinese state news agency, cites local emergency officials who put the toll at 16 dead and 32 injured. Eleven of the injured were in serious condition. The Nagqu city media office said at least 339 homes and 20 livestock sheds had collapsed.

The epicenter lay in a sparsely populated, high-altitude county in Nagqu, in the north of the region. The USGS places it about 190 kilometers (119 miles) east-northeast of Nagqu city, close to the border with Qinghai Province. The ground there sits at roughly 4,860 meters (about 15,900 feet) above sea level.

Several smaller aftershocks of around magnitude 3 and 4 followed. The USGS also warned of possible landslides on the steep terrain.

The agencies disagree on the depth. China's agency says 10 kilometers, while the USGS says about 18. Such differences are common in the first hours after a quake.

Rescue in Thin Air and Freezing Cold

Local fire and rescue teams have been sent to the area. Tibet's winter nights are harsh, and the high altitude makes physical work more difficult. Rescuers must also deal with damaged roads and the risk of further tremors.

Because the region is so thinly populated, the USGS expects the damage to be limited. Still, simple village houses built of stone, earth or brick often cannot withstand a quake of this size.

A Region Hit Again and Again

This is not the first disaster to strike Tibet recently. In January 2025, a magnitude 7.1 quake near Tingri killed at least 126 people, according to Chinese officials. Tibetans inside the region told Radio Free Asia (RFA, a U.S.-funded news service) that the real toll was probably above 200.

In late August 2026, a flash flood along the Nepal-Tibet border killed hundreds of people and destroyed several communities, according to CBS News and the Associated Press.

Questions About Transparency

After the 2025 quake, RFA's sources inside Tibet said that authorities had stopped body recovery operations while local people kept digging. They also said Tibetans were barred from sharing photos and videos of the damage online. These accounts come from anonymous sources and cannot be independently verified, since foreign reporters have very limited access to Tibet. Beijing has not publicly confirmed them.

After the 2023 earthquake in Qinghai, a Tibetan area, sources told RFA that government help was scarce and that Tibetans from other regions stepped in with money and supplies.

Whether independent information from the new quake zone will reach the outside world is still open. For now, almost everything comes from official Chinese channels.

Outlook

The coming days will show whether the death toll rises as teams reach remote villages. Aftershocks remain likely, and the bitter cold threatens people whose homes were destroyed. Reliable reports from independent observers and from Tibetans themselves will be an important check on the official figures.
