Australia and Fiji Forge Landmark Defence Alliance to Counter China's Pacific Push

Australia and Fiji have signed a historic mutual defence pact, the Ocean of Peace Alliance, alongside a billion-dollar economic partnership. The move marks Fiji's first-ever military alliance and Australia's fourth, as Canberra intensifies efforts to limit Beijing's growing influence across the South Pacific.

A Landmark Signing in Suva

Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese and Fijian Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka signed two major agreements in Fiji's capital, Suva, on Monday. The centerpiece, the Ocean of Peace Alliance, commits both nations to support one another militarily if either comes under attack.

Alongside it, the two countries signed the Vuvale Union, an economic and security cooperation agreement. Australia pledged more than one billion Australian dollars (about $693 million) in investment for Fiji over the next ten years.

Albanese called the pact one of the most significant steps Australia has ever taken with another nation. He stressed that mutual defence carries no greater obligation than showing up for a partner in a moment of crisis.

Fiji's First Alliance, Australia's Fourth

For Fiji, this is the first formal defence alliance in the country's history. For Australia, it becomes the fourth such treaty, following long-standing arrangements with the United States and New Zealand dating back to 1951, and a more recent pact with Papua New Guinea signed last year and set to take effect this week.

The treaty language allows other Pacific nations to join in the future, provided they support the alliance's goals of regional security. New Zealand's Prime Minister Christopher Luxon has already voiced interest in becoming part of the arrangement.

Growing Rivalry With China

The agreement fits into a broader pattern. Australia has described itself as being in a permanent state of contest with China across the Pacific and has responded with a string of security deals in the region.

Just last week, Australia signed a security agreement with Vanuatu, positioning itself as that country's preferred defence partner. Beijing has expressed concern that the arrangement, known as the Nakamal Agreement, may be aimed at limiting Chinese influence.

Concerns about Beijing's regional ambitions trace back to 2022, when China signed a secretive security pact with the Solomon Islands. That deal fueled fears among Western allies that Beijing could eventually establish a permanent military presence in the South Pacific, a scenario Australia and its partners have worked to prevent ever since.

Fiji Downplays Tensions With Beijing

Despite the clear geopolitical undertone, Rabuka sought to reassure Beijing that the new treaties are not directed against it. He said he did not expect a strong reaction from China and stressed that the alliance does not put Fiji's relationship with Beijing at risk.

Rabuka framed the agreements around three pillars: closer security cooperation, deeper economic integration, and stronger people-to-people ties between the two nations.

What Comes Next

Albanese's Pacific diplomacy push continues this week. On Tuesday, he travels to the Solomon Islands to meet Prime Minister Matthew Wale, where talks are expected to continue on a broader strategic treaty. The Solomon Islands government has signaled it may review its existing security arrangement with China.

Later in the week, Albanese will host the leaders of Papua New Guinea and Tonga in Brisbane, continuing Australia's efforts to deepen ties across the region as competition with Beijing for Pacific influence shows no sign of slowing.
