On September 19, The Wall Street Journal, citing people familiar with the matter, reported that Xi canceled his attendance at a BRICS summit dinner in New Delhi on September 12 due to feeling unwell. Foreign Minister Wang Yi attended the dinner in his place. Xi had previously accepted Modi’s invitation but withdrew at the last minute. Beijing did not explain the reason for Xi’s absence, and the Chinese Embassy in Washington did not respond to media inquiries. The report also noted that there is currently no evidence showing Xi suffered a serious illness, stroke, or fainting episode.
