Trump Administration Blocks New Chinese Robots as Security Fears Mount
The U.S. government has banned imports of new Chinese-made humanoid and quadruped robots, along with certain power inverters, citing national security risks. The move, announced by the Federal Communications Commission, comes after researchers found serious hidden vulnerabilities in robots made by China's leading manufacturer, Unitree.

A New Front in the Tech Standoff With Beijing
The Federal Communications Commission (FCC) announced on July 28, 2026, that it will block the import of newly designed humanoid and four-legged ("quadruped") robots made in China. The ban also covers a category of power inverters, devices that connect solar panels, batteries, and data centers to the electric grid.
The decision was first reported by Reuters and quickly confirmed by other outlets, including The Washington Post and CNBC. It marks one of the most direct actions yet by the Trump administration against China's fast-growing robotics industry.
FCC Chairman Brendan Carr said the restrictions are meant to protect "America's critical supply chains." The agency stated that these devices could let "malign actors" collect sensitive data, spy on U.S. facilities, or even take remote control of the machines.
What Exactly Was Banned
The new rule only applies to robot and inverter models that have not yet reached the U.S. market. Products already approved for sale can still be sold for now, though the FCC kept the power to revoke those approvals later if needed.
In practice, this means Chinese companies planning to launch newer, more advanced robots in the United States will be blocked before they arrive. The same applies to a new generation of grid-connected inverters.
China dominates both markets. The world's leading maker of humanoid and quadruped robots is Unitree, a Hangzhou-based company that controls close to a fifth of the global market, according to Counterpoint Research. In the inverter business, Chinese firms Sungrow and Huawei are the global leaders.
Why Washington Is Worried
Robots built for factories, universities, and even public spaces are constantly connected to Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, or cellular networks so they can move, "see" through cameras, and receive software updates. That connectivity is exactly what worries U.S. officials.
Independent cybersecurity researchers have already found real problems, not just theoretical ones. In March 2025, researchers documented a hidden access point (a so-called "backdoor," officially catalogued as CVE-2025-2894) built into Unitree's Go1 robot. It connected automatically to a cloud server based in China and could give anyone holding the right access key full remote control of the device. Vulnerable units were later confirmed to be running inside networks at MIT, Princeton, and other research institutions, without a fix ever being issued.
A second, more severe flaw was disclosed later that year by independent researchers under the name "UniPwn." It affected Unitree's newer Go2, B2, G1, and H1 models and allowed an attacker within wireless range to seize full control of a robot. Because the flaw could spread automatically from one robot to another nearby, researchers described the risk as a potential "robot botnet."
Power inverters raise similar concerns. Since these devices are remotely managed for updates and monitoring, security officials fear they could be used the same way as compromised routers were in the 2023 "Volt Typhoon" hacking campaign, in which Chinese state-linked hackers quietly embedded themselves inside U.S. infrastructure networks.
Beijing's Reaction
China's embassy in Washington rejected the move, calling on the United States to "heed the objective and rational voices" of businesses in both countries and to stop what it called the "smearing" of Chinese companies. The embassy added that Beijing would "take all necessary measures" if it judged its interests to be harmed.
Unitree, Sungrow, and Huawei did not immediately respond to requests for comment from Reuters.
The Chinese Communist Party has a long record of pressuring or directing companies under its jurisdiction, including through national security and data-sharing laws that apply even to private firms. Western security agencies have repeatedly flagged this as a structural risk that goes beyond any single company's intentions.
A Firmer Line After a Quieter Stretch
During his first term, President Donald Trump was among the first Western leaders to publicly warn about Chinese tech companies, intellectual property theft, and state-backed espionage, most notably through the long-running campaign against telecom giant Huawei. His administration's early second-term approach had been comparatively cautious, partly in response to Beijing's use of rare earth mineral export controls as leverage.
Tuesday's action signals a return to a tougher stance. Republican Representative John Moolenaar, who chairs the House Select Committee on China, welcomed the FCC's move, saying it "protects our country and strengthens our nation's robotics industry." Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent has separately warned that Chinese AI companies could face U.S. sanctions over intellectual property theft.
Officials are also keen to avoid repeating the rare-earths experience, in which years of near-total dependence on China left the U.S. with little leverage once Beijing tightened export controls.
What Happens Next
The FCC is expected to grant exemptions to robot and inverter makers from countries other than China, following the pattern it used in earlier bans on foreign-made drones and internet routers. That would let allied manufacturers continue selling in the U.S. market largely unaffected.
For now, the ban applies only to future models. But given the FCC's stated authority to revoke existing approvals, Unitree and other Chinese manufacturers already operating in the U.S. market may face further restrictions if new security concerns emerge.
The decision is likely to accelerate a broader U.S. push to build a domestic robotics and AI supply chain independent of Chinese hardware, an effort officials describe as essential to both economic competitiveness and national security.
