A State Dinner With an Uninvited Soundtrack

President Donald Trump and First Lady Melania Trump welcomed Xi Jinping and his wife, Peng Liyuan, to the White House on the evening of September 24, 2026. The event was meant to project unity and diplomatic warmth between the two governments. Instead, protest chants repeatedly broke through the formal atmosphere, at times overpowering the Marine Corps band performance inside.

Demonstrators gathered behind fencing along Lafayette Park, just north of the White House. A woman leading the crowd with a megaphone directed chants including "Xi Jinping, You're Not Welcome," "Free Hong Kong," "Keep Taiwan Free" and "China Sponsors Genocide." Other groups called for "freedom for political prisoners."

Who Showed Up — and Why

The crowd was not a single movement but a coalition. Tibetan activists, Uyghur advocacy groups, Hong Kong democracy supporters, mainland Chinese dissidents and practitioners of Falun Gong (also known as Falun Dafa, a meditation and spiritual discipline banned in China since 1999) stood side by side. Each group carries its own grievance against Beijing, but all share the same target: the Chinese Communist Party's record of suppressing dissent and religious belief.

Some protesters leaned into satire alongside anger. A handful dressed as Winnie the Pooh, mocking Xi over an online comparison that Chinese censors have long tried to erase from the country's internet. President Trump has previously used the same nickname, calling Xi "Pooh Bear" in public remarks.

A Guest List Full of Tech Power, but Missing Political Prisoners

Inside, the dinner brought together 134 guests, including some of the most powerful names in American technology: Jensen Huang of Nvidia, Mark Zuckerberg of Meta, Tim Cook of Apple, Elon Musk of Tesla and SpaceX, Jeff Bezos of Amazon, Sam Altman of OpenAI, Sundar Pichai of Google, Satya Nadella of Microsoft, Lisa Su of AMD, and TikTok's Shou Zi Chew. The guest list underscored how central AI competition, trade and rare-earth minerals have become to U.S.-China relations under the Trump administration.

None of Beijing's political prisoners had a seat at that table. House Speaker Mike Johnson has repeatedly pressed for the release of Dr. Gulshan Abbas, a retired Uyghur physician who disappeared from her home in Xinjiang in September 2018. Chinese authorities later revealed she had been secretly sentenced to 20 years in prison on terrorism-related charges her family says were fabricated. Johnson brought her daughter, Ziba Murat, as his guest to the 2026 State of the Union address, and a bipartisan Senate resolution earlier this year urged Trump to raise her case directly with Xi.

Falun Gong's Long Fight for Recognition

Falun Gong's presence outside the White House reflects a persecution campaign that has run for more than two and a half decades. Beijing outlawed the practice in 1999 after it drew tens of millions of followers, and human rights researchers have since documented forced labor, arbitrary detention and torture of practitioners who refused to renounce their beliefs.

The most disturbing allegation — organ harvesting from living prisoners of conscience — has drawn scrutiny well beyond Falun Gong circles. An independent panel of international lawyers, the London-based China Tribunal, concluded in 2019 that forced organ harvesting had occurred in China "for a substantial period of time" and that Falun Gong practitioners were likely its primary victims. Beijing has consistently denied the allegations, calling them fabrications meant to smear the Chinese government.

What Comes Next

Trump and Xi are expected to visit the National Archives together on Friday, capping a three-day visit built around trade, artificial intelligence safeguards and rare-earth supply chains. Fox News Digital reported that it had asked the White House whether the release of Abbas or other political prisoners is part of the negotiations; no answer had been made public as of this writing.

For the demonstrators in Lafayette Park, the outcome of those closed-door talks matters more than the pageantry of a state dinner. Whether Trump raises human rights directly with Xi, and whether it produces any tangible result, will determine if Thursday night's chants were symbolic noise — or the start of real pressure on Beijing.
