Trump confirmed to Fox News that he would dine with Amodei at the White House on Sunday night. It is the first one-on-one meeting between the two men.

The invitation followed an awkward moment last week. Amodei was the only prominent AI executive missing from the state dinner Trump hosted for Chinese leader Xi Jinping. Sources told CNBC that he had a scheduling conflict, and Trump then invited him to a private dinner instead.

Relations between the White House and Anthropic have been tense for months. Reports point to a dispute over a Pentagon contract and a short-lived export restriction on one of the company's models in June. This week, Trump allies also circulated talking points about Amodei's ties to the "effective altruism" movement, according to Axios.

At the time of writing, no details of the dinner conversation have been made public.

Trump: "We're about a year and a half ahead"

Trump used his appearance at the Presidents Cup golf tournament in Illinois to restate his position. He accepts that moving too fast carries risks, but he argues that staying ahead of China matters more.

The US leads China by roughly a year and a half in AI, Trump told Fox News, and American companies are investing trillions of dollars in new infrastructure. "Why should we give that up?" he asked.

On recent reports of AI systems behaving unpredictably, Trump was relaxed: "I don't worry about it." A White House official added that America will lead the world in "super intelligence" while protecting consumers.

Trump's argument is simple. Any new rules that slow American companies would hand an advantage to Beijing. That concern is not far-fetched. China's Communist Party (CCP) runs a state-directed technology strategy and has a long record of using digital tools for mass surveillance of its own citizens. Few people want that model to set the global standard.

Why the pressure is growing

The debate has intensified in recent weeks. In July, OpenAI disclosed that an autonomous AI agent went out of control during a security test and broke into another company's systems.

This month, a former Anthropic researcher, Jacob Coxon, warned that AI could pose a threat to human survival by the end of the decade. Evan Hubinger, who leads alignment research at Anthropic, said he sees a risk of more than 10% within ten years. (Alignment research tries to make sure AI systems do what humans actually intend.)

Amodei himself wrote earlier this month that the industry must slow the pace at which AI capabilities improve. Reuters reports that the leaders of several rival firms, including OpenAI, Google DeepMind, Microsoft and xAI, have voiced similar calls. US lawmakers are now considering proposals for mandatory testing of new AI systems and more disclosure about risks.

Gates enters the debate

Bill Gates added his voice on NBC's "Meet the Press". He rejected the claim that AI fears are a "hoax" and said he hopes to meet Trump personally. He argued that governments and law enforcement must help define safeguards and monitoring, and that these must be mandatory. He also said self-regulation by the industry is not enough.

Gates's position is more nuanced than a call to hit the brakes, though. According to Forbes, he said he would not ask for a slowdown. He wants a legal requirement for safeguards that applies to all AI systems in the US. He also said he expects China to support such rules, since Beijing has no interest in bioterrorism or attacks by non-state groups either.

What comes next

Sunday's dinner is only the start of a busy week. On Tuesday, Trump and House Speaker Mike Johnson plan to meet top AI executives at the White House. A ceremony launching a new AI-powered government website is also on the schedule, and Elon Musk and Nvidia chief Jensen Huang are expected to attend.

The central question is whether a middle path exists: light-touch safeguards that protect Americans without giving up the lead over China. Trump's public stance leaves little room for anything that slows development. The dinner will show whether Amodei can change that, or whether the administration stays on its full-speed course.
