Taiwan's government has sharply criticized China's plan to hold a joint navy drill with Indonesia in waters east of the island. Taipei's Mainland Affairs Council, the body that handles China policy, called the move a "military provocation" late on Tuesday.

The council demanded that Beijing "immediately stop this dangerous behaviour that undermines the status quo." It argued the drill is designed to trick the world into believing China already controls the area.

China's defense ministry confirmed on Tuesday that the exercise will take place in mid-August. It described the drill as a routine "navigation exercise" involving a Chinese warship and an Indonesian navy vessel, though it gave no exact location.

What Makes This Drill Different

China's military operates around Taiwan almost daily, but joint drills with a foreign navy so close to the island are highly unusual. Neither Taiwan's defense ministry nor Indonesia's navy has responded to requests for comment on the plan.

According to Bloomberg, the Chinese frigate involved is the Type 054A vessel Honghe, which will train alongside an Indonesian navy frigate. The reported focus is on communication drills and at-sea resupply between the two ships.

Taipei sees the timing and symbolism differently. In its statement, the Mainland Affairs Council called the drill "exercises in name, expansion in fact" — a deliberate step, it said, to project Chinese jurisdiction over waters that do not belong to Beijing.

Part of a Wider Pattern

This is not an isolated incident. China began coast guard patrols off Taiwan's east coast back in June, a move that already angered Taipei and worried Washington and other Western capitals at the time.

Beijing claims democratically governed Taiwan as its own territory, a claim Taiwan's government firmly rejects. Taipei insists that only the Taiwanese people can decide their own political future.

The announcement also lands while Taiwan runs its annual Han Kuang war games, in which the island's armed forces rehearse how to repel a Chinese attack. Critics of Beijing's expanding military footprint argue the new drill fits a broader Chinese Communist Party strategy of gradually normalizing military presence around Taiwan without firing a shot — creeping pressure rather than open confrontation.

Washington's Role in the Background

The Chinese announcement came the same day that a senior U.S. defense official, Under Secretary of War for Policy Elbridge Colby, met Indonesia's defense minister, Sjafrie Sjamsoeddin, in Jakarta. The Trump administration has been working to deepen defense ties with Indonesia as part of its broader Indo-Pacific strategy to counter Chinese expansion.

Sjafrie said afterward that closer defense cooperation with the United States is not meant to result in a U.S. military base on Indonesian soil, according to his office.

Indonesia has no formal diplomatic relations with Taiwan, in line with most countries worldwide. Still, the island is home to more than 300,000 Indonesian migrant workers, a link that keeps the two economically and socially connected despite the lack of official ties.

Taiwan's government says it will keep close watch on developments in the surrounding waters and take "necessary and appropriate measures" if needed. It remains unclear whether this means increased naval patrols, diplomatic protests, or coordination with allies such as the United States and Japan.

For now, the exact date, route, and location of the China-Indonesia drill remain undisclosed. Given Beijing's pattern of expanding military activity around Taiwan step by step, observers expect this drill to be one of several tests of how far China can push before facing a stronger international response.
