Known as the “capital of China’s influencer economy,” Hangzhou now has one live-streamer for every 244 people, with 50,000 people competing for a limited number of positions. However, amid an economic slowdown, rising traffic acquisition costs, and an imbalance between supply and demand, salaries across the industry have fallen by around 50% on average. Many streamers are now facing unemployment or are being forced to switch careers, fueling debate over whether Hangzhou’s influencer economy is entering a period of collapse.
