With TikTok’s shutdown scheduled for Sunday, January 19th, large numbers of American TikTok users have protested the government’s ban by flocking to another Chinese app, Xiaohongshu (commonly referred to as “Red Book” or “Red Note”), seeking refuge. The Chinese app has nervously welcomed the influx of American “TikTok refugees” with a mix of excitement and apprehension. Meanwhile, the Chinese government is concerned that its Great Firewall might be breached and that these free-spirited Americans could ignite an online color revolution!
