The Chinese Communist Party's extreme containment measures against COVID-19 have sparked public discontent. This was especially so after the November 24th fire at a high-rise building in Urumqi of Xinjiang. Escape routes being locked and the inability of fire trucks to reach the scene in time due to the blockade of the area, has ultimately resulted in 10 deaths and 9 injuries. The tragedy, caused by the excessive epidemic prevention measures, was the spark that ignited the anger of the Chinese people. Since November 26, massive protests have erupted in a dozen large and medium-sized cities, including Shanghai, Beijing and Nanjing, and have spread to more than 100 university campuses, including Peking and Tsinghua University. The protesters resisted the CCP’s "zeroing" policy, and raised the slogan "we don’t want closure, we want freedom". People in Shanghai even shouted "Down with the Communist Party! Down with Xi Jinping!" This is a wave of widespread public outrage that hasn’t been seen in China for decades since the Tiananmen Square incident in 1989.
