What's China's real unemployment rate?

According to data released by China’s National Bureau of Statistics on May 16, the national unemployment rate (based on surveys) for urban areas was 5.2% in April, down 0.1 percentage from March and the lowest level since 2022. However, this number is far from realistic. Based on the methodology developed by a group of Chinese finance professionals in 2017 and using the most recent data, China has over 200 million people unemployed, and the average national unemployment rate is around 26%. Unemployment in urban areas is a serious problem. Lei will compare rural vs. urban, China vs. U.S., and walk through the numbers.
