What happened to US-China relations and how did we get to this point?

Sino-US relations reached an all-time low this past week. Chinese official media outlets have been publishing Cultural-Revolution-style articles attacking the U.S.. American politicians are speeding to enact laws to counter CCP and save Taiwan. Why did it take the Americans 30 years to fully recognize the threat of the CCP?
