Life in China has become unbearable. Government employees are facing sweeping pay cuts—some as high as 50%. As businesses shut down and unemployment rises, new industries are emerging to cater to the jobless: “pretend working offices” for the unemployed and “human feed” programs for the poor. Young people are discovering that their most stable job is staying home to care for their grandparents. The bleak economic reality has sparked at least 21 protests across China in just four days.
