Recently, in Guang’an, Sichuan, a man in his sixties was fined 200 yuan (about 30 US dollars) for smoking cured meat at home. Local authorities cited “air pollution” as the reason. Smoking cured meat is a centuries-old tradition in Sichuan and Chongqing, deeply rooted in the culture of the region. However, community officials labeled it a violation and imposed the fine. The man was also required to sign a pledge promising not to smoke meat at home again and agreeing to accept any punishment if he reoffends.
