On May 27, a massive explosion rocked a chemical plant in east China at approximately noon. According to state media Xinhua, the blast killed at least five people, injured 19, and left six others missing.
The explosion occurred at Shandong Youdao Chemical Co., Ltd. in Gaomi city, Shandong Province. Video footage shared online showed thick smoke billowing skyward, grayish-white dust rising dozens of meters, and pipelines spraying gas outward. People were seen fleeing the scene, some with blood on their faces and bodies.
Multiple injured individuals were sent to at least two local hospitals, according to local media, including Gaomi City People’s Hospital and Gaomi City Municipal Hospital.
As of 5:35 p.m. local time on May 27, Chinese state media had not yet disclosed the cause of the explosion or provided further details on casualties.

The explosion’s powerful shockwave caused significant damage as far as 3.1 miles away. Ms. Zhang, a shop owner, told a news account on Chinese social media platform Weibo that her electric vehicle shop suffered collapsed ceilings and shattered glass. The shop’s door frame was so distorted that the door could not be opened.
A restaurant owner, also located approximately 3 miles from the blast site, told local media YCWB that he clearly heard the explosion. For safety, he and his family evacuated to a location about 9 miles away.
According to a local media outlet, residents in nearby communities, including the Fenghuang Community, were evacuated. The explosion shattered glass in nearby schools, leading to a temporary suspension of classes, with some students injured by broken glass.
“Nearly all the glass in surrounding buildings was shattered. I didn’t dare take off my mask because of the pungent smell,” said one shop owner near the site.
Another shop owner, located about 2 miles from the blast, reported that the explosion was extremely loud, shattering windows facing the blast’s direction. “It seems a high-voltage line was cut, and the nearby area has lost power,” she added that local authorities immediately cordoned off the site after the explosion.
Shandong Youdao Chemical Co., Ltd., established in 2019, is a holding company of Shandong Haomai Group. The company specializes in manufacturing high-efficiency, low-toxicity pesticides and their intermediates.
The plant occupies more than 114 acres of land in the Gaomi Renhe chemical park and employs more than 300 people, according to the company’s website.
